It all started in 1977…

1977

First AEO store opens in Twelve Oaks Mall, Novi, Michigan.

1980

Silverman’s Menswear becomes part of the newly formed Retail Ventures Inc., which includes the American Eagle brand.

1990

Schottenstein Stores Corp. purchases the company and begins the first year of AE private label products including men’s bootcut and worker jeans.

1994

AEO goes public with its initial offering of 2.3 million shares on NASDAQ under “AEOS” symbol.

1997

AE introduces signature denim, offering a fit for everyone.

1998

AE enters the digital age with its launch of ae.com.

1999

AE becomes the official outfitter of Dawson’s Creek (the hottest TV show of the late nineties).

2001

AEO opens its first stores outside the U.S. and enters the Canadian market.

2001

AEO opens its New York Design Center in Manhattan.

2006

Aerie launches nationwide.

2007

AEO begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the symbol “AEO”.

2007

AEO moves to its new corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood.

2009

AE’s Times Square flagship store opens with four levels of shopping.

2011

AE launches its mobile app.

2013

AEO hosts it first Community Day in which corporate associates volunteer and give back to the community.

2013

AE opens its first store in Mexico City.

2014

#AerieREAL campaign launches.

2014

Hazleton, PA Distribution Center opens—AEO’s first LEED certified building.

2016

Todd Snyder and Tailgate join the AEO brand portfolio.

2017

AEO Inc. celebrates 40 Years.

2017

Aerie reaches $500 million in sales.

2018

AE surpasses $1 billion in jean sales.

2019

Aerie celebrates 10 years with Bright Pink

The AE Pride Campaign raises more than $1.2 million for the It Gets Better Project

AEO marks 25 years as a public company
